Michael

DR. MICHAEL PETTY

Dr. Michael Petty taught applied statistics at university, then went on with a fellow academic to establish SMART Research, the first sensory research company in Australia.

SMART clients over the years have included most of the major international producers of processed foods, drinks and personal care products.

Michael has personally developed a number of new analytical packages such as the widely used ConSpec© (which checks for the cannibalization of products), now replaced by Benchmark, as well as STURT analysis, (now in version 2.1) which shows the range of values consumers will accept in any product attribute, and where products go outside that range.

In 2002 Michael began a continuing communications survey for Australian state governments breaking new ground in communications research. He has also worked on local government surveys and completed demographic analyses for the Australian Federal Labour Party, now in Government.

Michael’s interests outside sociology and statistics include the study of Buddhism, reading cosmology, philosophy and thrillers, and meditation. He wishes he were closer to enlightenment.
